Echinacea, Elderflower & Elderberry - Important Covid-19 Info

I am writing this in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic that's hitting the world hard.  We have received some conflicting information as to whether Echinacea, Elderflower (which we use in our Cold & Flu Tincture), and Elderberry are safe and appropriate for viral infections, namely the Covid-19 infection.  There has been some conjecture as to whether Covid-19 could cause a "cytokine storm" which means an over-response by the immune system.  As this virus is so new, not much is known about it yet and whether this is true or not.  Some have expressed concern that these herbs might further stimulate the immune system and cause an over-reaction, making a cytokine storm worse.  After doing some exhaustive research, I have new and interesting information for you on this.  These are my findings:

Fenugreek Info

Fenugreek is one of the most effective herbs for increasing breastmilk production. Even moms of adopted babies have been able to establish a milk supply using Fenugreek

Fenugreek: A great herb for increasing milk production, but you need to know how to use it correctly!

Fenugreek Seed is one of the most well-known and effective herbs used to increase breastmilk production, BUT there are some things you need to know when using it.

Fertility & Hormones

This has always mystified me.  I've talked to A LOT of women who are working on fertility - trying to become pregnant - who have worked with fertility clinics.  Frequently, they say the doctors don't check for hormone imbalance!  This is a huge factor in whether a woman can become pregnant or not!  If there is hormone imbalance, perhaps she may not be ovulating, or her luteal phase (second half of the menstrual cycle, which comes after ovulation) isn't long enough.  These things can definitely hamper conception!

Flower Essences (and Rescue Remedy)

In the late 1920's, Dr. Edward Bach, a renowned British scientist and physician, observed that his patients' healing and well-being were directly influenced by their state of mind and emotional health. He noticed that the personality, attitude and present outlook of a patient had a great deal to do with their being cured or remaining sick. He understood that "the personality of the individual is of even more importance than the body in the treatment of disease". He realized that, instead of treating the patient as a body with an illness, the patient needed to be treated like an individual. "Treat the patient, not the disease."

Galactagogues - Herbs that Increase Breastmilk Production

A galactagogue is an herb that is used to help increase breastmilk production in nursing mothers. Below is a list of some of the more effective and popular herbs and some important information about each.  For a list of the products that Herb Lore offers that include these herbs, information about which one is appropriate for your situation, and helpful dosage information, please click HERE.

Hem Stopper Tincture (formerly Anti-Hemorrhage Tincture)

Herb Lore’s Hem Stopper Tincture is used to help staunch bleeding after a birth.  It’s best used immediately after the birth (and after the birth of the placenta), and as long as the bleeding or risk of bleeding continues.  If the placenta has not been birthed yet and is the cause for bleeding, the Placenta Release Tincture is then recommended.

Itching During Pregnancy (PUPPS)

We frequently get clients who are pregnant and are experiencing itchiness.  This is more than just your average itchiness from stretching or dry skin – it can be extreme and really awful to experience.  It’s called PUPPS or cholestasis.  Along with the terrible itching, symptoms can also include brown/dark yellow urine (like beer), light-colored stool, bloodwork showing high liver enzymes, and high bile acid.  We have had tremendous success with our clients using liver herbs. (I have created a product specifically for this called

Labor Induction

I remember the last several weeks of my pregnancy. They seemed to take FOREVER!  I was carrying a 9-1/2 pound baby and was SO incredibly uncomfortable! Any fear of labor was gone - I just wanted this baby OUT. As hard as it is to wait though, it is so worth it.

Black Cohosh Root
Blue Cohosh Root
Ginger Root

Mastitis & Plugged Ducts

These were two unexpected and VERY unpleasant issues that began to creep up on me just 3 weeks after the birth of my daughter.  Actually it didn’t creep up at all - it actually happened very fast – one minute I was feeling fine and within a ½ hour, I was feeling horrible.  Like I had the worst flu of my life.  Fever, achiness - it seemed like there was pain everywhere.  And I had to take care of my new baby while I was feeling more horrible than I could ever remember feeling.  Finally we figured out that I had a breast infection.  I did the usual route of a round of antibiotics, which made

Placenta Release Tincture

Herb Lore’s Placenta Release Tincture is used to help expel the placenta after baby’s birth.

Poke Root

Poke Root is one of the best herbs to help clear mastitis (breast infection). It is traditionally used as a lymph cleanser, and has a special affinity for red, inflamed mammary glands, testicles and throat. The typical experience with this herb is that a breast infection will usually clear up within 24 hours, without the use of antibiotics. It is also useful in cases of a sore throat with swollen lymph glands in the neck. This too, usually will clear overnight.

Postpartum Sitz Bath Herbs

Herb Lore's Postpartum Sitz Bath Herbs is an herbal combination used after birth to help soothe and heal the mother's perineal/vaginal area (even in severe cases), as well as to help heal baby's umbilical cord stump. The sitz bath combination contains the following herbs:

Pre-Conception Tea & Pre-Conception Tincture

Herb Lore's Pre-Conception Tea (and Tincture)  may be enjoyed freely throughout the day, every day, for months at a time. The herbs work wonderfully together to provide nutrition while encouraging a favorable environment to promote fertility and conception. These herbs, when used in combination with eachother in the correct amounts (as they are in this product), work to enhance fertility, increasing the odds of conception. Plus it tastes good and is very healthy for you!

Pregnancy Tea & Pregnancy Tea Plus

Herb Lore's Pregnancy Tea and Pregnancy Tea Plus are healthful and refreshing herbal combinations that are supportive and toning to the entire system before, during and after pregnancy. The regular Pregnancy Tea may be used throughout the entire pregnancy, and because of its high vitamin and mineral content, achieves its best results when used on a long-term, daily basis. Pregnancy Tea Plus is similar to Pregnancy Tea, with the addition of Partridge Berry, a late-pregnancy tonic which further helps to strengthen and nourish the uterus, preparing it for the upcoming work of labor and birth. Because this herb has some very slight oxytocic properties to it (meaning it has the potential to start uterine contractions, although it's not likely), it's recommended for use during the last six weeks of pregnancy only.  (The regular Pregnancy Tea may be taken throughout the entire pregnancy however.)

Storage of your Herbal Products

Herbal products come in many forms - teas, tinctures (liquid extracts), capsules, tablets, compresses, poultices, salves, creams, baths, footbaths (to name a few!), and of course, used in foods!  Here is how to care and store some of the most frequently used forms of herbal products:

Dried Herbs

If possible, store your dried herbs in a glass container, which will keep them fresh longer. Using dark glass will help to further keep light out, which ages the herb more quickly and can compromise its quality.  A dried herb should appear vibrant in color and have a wonderful smell to it.  Even though it’s dried, it should have an “alive” vibrancy to it – you should be able to sense the life in it!

The Importance of Herb Freshness

I love to cook with herbs.  They give such amazing flavor and add to the health benefits of the foods being cooked.  I’m sure you like to use herbs for cooking too!  Have you ever used an old herb, something that’s been in your kitchen cupboard maybe a little too long?  How did it taste?  Probably ok, but not that great.  And maybe you couldn’t even taste it at all!  And now, have you used a fresh herb with your cooking?  Maybe something you’ve gotten fresh at the store or even picked out of your own garden?  It’s a HUGE difference in taste, isn’t it?  Well, this principle applies to medicinal herbs just like it does with culinary herbs – simply put, fresher herbs will give you MUCH better results.

Tinctures - What are they and how do you use them?

Learn what is a tincture, how you take a tincture, what is a tincture dropperful, and why the tincture doesn't fill the entire dropper

TINCTURES: What's a dropperful? It doesn't fill up the whole glass tube!

People are commonly confused when they read tincture directions suggesting they take a "dropperful" or two of a tincture.  When they squeeze the bulb on the droppertop, they are surprised to see that it fills the glass tube only a little bit of the way.  They try to squeeze harder to try to fill it completely, but it never works.  This is why:
