Sage is widely known for its helpful benefits with both nursing mothers (to help dry up or decrease breastmilk production) as well as women experiencing menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes. Here's more...
Lactation:Â Sage is one of the most effective herbs for drying up or decreasing breastmilk, which is helpful during weaning or for correcting over-production, or in cases of fetal demise.
Breastmilk over-production can lead to the following:
- engorgement (engorgement on day 3 postpartum when the milk comes in is typical and normal. This usually normalizes within a day or two, but if it persists or poses difficulty with breastfeeding, or leads to the following issues, Sage use may be appropriate.)
- plugged ducts
- mastitis / breast infection
Menopause:Â Sage is one of the most effective herbs for helping ease hot flashes in menopausal or peri-menopausal women and can be used as the need arises. When used in conjunction with Vitex, it has shown to help eliminate hot flashes and night sweats altogether in most women.
NOTE: Â Not for use by those who are pregnant.
Organic Sage Leaf. The regular tincture is extracted in organic grape alcohol and the non-alcohol version is extracted in organic vegetable glycerine and distilled water. All Herb Lore tinctures are non-GMO and are gluten-free.
For curbing over-production, it is recommended to start with a very low dose of 10-15 drops of tincture twice a day. If this doesn't bring the desired decrease, continue to slowly increase the amount of herb until the desired balance is achieved. If you find that you've taken too much of the herb and it's decreased your production more than you wanted, just decrease the herb, and your production will bounce right back up. As each body is different and reacts differently, experiment with the dosage levels until you find the right balance for you. Results should become apparent within a day or two.
For weaning purposes, or to stop breastmilk production altogether, it is recommended to start with two droppersful of tincture three times daily. Increase the dosage levels as necessary to achieve the desired results. Results should be apparent in a day or two.
For alleviating hot flashes, start with two droppersful of the tincture 2-3 times a day. Feel free to adjust this dosage according to results. Everybody's bodies are all different.
Hi Pam, I'm so happy to have found your products, the Nursing Tincture (Moringa Blend) in particular works really well. I was afraid that going back to work would make my milk supply drop which is one of the main reasons I bought it. It's actually making me over-produce now and has allowed me to save up a really nice stash in my freezer for my son. I'm trying to decrease my supply now for my morning pump as I have a lot of milk (sometimes 30oz in one morning). Do you have any suggestions on how I can safely reduce my supply without totally diminishing it? Thank you, A.S. (Yes, Sage Tea or Tincture helps to gently decrease milk supply, or simply cut back or stop using the Nursing Tincture Moringa Blend if your supply is adequate. You may not have need of it any more!)
