Black Cohosh is used by pregnant women wanting to start uterine contractions as well as by women experiencing menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.
Birth: Black Cohosh helps to start and regulate uterine contractions. Black Cohosh is best used in conjunction with Blue Cohosh for best and most consistent results, as in Herb Lore's Labor Tincture. NOTE: Use only at the due date, never during pregnancy as it may cause pre-term labor and birth or miscarriage. Please see our article Herbs to Avoid During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding.
Menopause: Black Cohosh helps alleviate menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes. It works in the body like estrogen, but is NOT a real estrogen hormone. It may take 2-4 weeks of continuous use to see best results, although many have reported relief in a much shorter amount of time.
For immediate relief of hot flashes, Sage is very helpful. Sage provides short-term, immediate results whereas Black Cohosh provides slower, but more long-lasting results. Both can be used together. (See our Premium Article about Hot Flash Helps for further information on what can trigger hot flashes (so you know what you should avoid in order to prevent them) and detailed information about the various herbs that can help, and which still-menstrating women should use and which non-menstrating women should use.
